Critical Illness cover V Income Protection

Think about it, how would you pay the bills if you couldn’t work, would the state benefit be enough to get by on?

This is not a nice question to consider (sorry it’s our job to ask the nasty one’s)

It is a vital one if you believe your loved ones might struggle to pay the mortgage or meet the day-to-day costs of living and running a household if you were seriously ill. In this case, critical illness or income protection insurance is a ‘no brainer’, providing a lifeline if you develop a serious medical condition.

Now some of you will wonder what I am rambling on about when I have been talking about nothing but income protection for the last few weeks! Has he totally lost the plot? No there is a method to my madness. I will get to that please bear with me 😊.

Time for some scary facts and figures ( from Irish life) by the way you will pay more if you choose Irish Life

We all know the feeling of been under the weather and all we want to do is stay under the duvet and let the storm pass, imagine though if the storm were to last a year, two years or longer, would you be fretting about how to pay the bills as well as get better?

How does Critical illness work?

Critical illness insurance is designed to pay out if you suffer from one of a range of serious illnesses covered by the policy. Unlike income protection, which also covers illness, there is no requirement to be off work for a claim to be successful; the trigger for a critical illness claim is the fact that you have been diagnosed with an illness. (be aware the illness must be serious and match what is stated in the policy) This is where you need to read the ridiculously small print!! You have been warned.

In simple terms if you suffer a heart attack, and you have a serious illness policy worth €100k then your policy will pay you a lump sum of €100k.

You put your back out and can’t work for a year a critical illness policy will not pay you anything even though we all know back pain is debilitating its not classed as serious illness.

So Critical Illness or Income Protection

Ideally both! But if I had to choose Income Protection wins hands down.

Think of serious illness cover as Third-Party Fire & Theft while Income Protection is Fully Comprehensive.

If your concerned about cost Income Protection is in most cases less expensive than serious illness
